The hair removal market is not very recent. Several lasers and pulsed lights have been available for over a decade. Why is hair destroyed by these technologies? Simply because it absorbs their light, which then transforms into heat. It is this heat that destroys the bulb responsible for hair growth. The absorption in the hair depends on the type of laser used.
However, venturing into the laser hair removal market is not always easy. Often, when shopping for laser treatment, people ask about the price without asking other questions about the technique and the laser used. This can result in ineffective treatment or risks of burns if the choice of laser is not suitable for your skin type.
Here is a summary of the lasers available for hair removal:
1. Alexandrite Laser:
The Alexandrite laser emits a wavelength of 755 nanometers (Gold Standard for hair removal), making it particularly effective in targeting melanin pigments in hair follicles. It is considered one of the most effective lasers for hair removal and is generally well tolerated by patients. Its major advantage lies in its effectiveness for people with light skin type and dark hair. However, it may not be suitable for dark skin types due to the risk of burns.
Advantages of Alexandrite:
- The best solution for light skin type.
- The most effective laser.
- Effective on fine hairs.
Disadvantages of Alexandrite:
- Cannot be used on dark or black skin type.
- A 4-week waiting period is necessary before treatment if the skin is tanned.
- Greater risk of burn if the laser is not properly configured.
2. Diode Laser:
The Diode laser typically emits a wavelength of 800 to 810 nanometers. It offers moderate penetration into the skin and is often used for quick treatments. It is considered suitable for all skin types, although its performance may vary depending on the color of the hair and the person’s skin type. It can be used at the beginning of treatment for its speed, but often, treatments need to be completed with an Alexandrite laser for light skin types when the hairs become thin or pale. It can be used on Black skin types, but often results plateau at 50% or less, as increasing energy increases the risk of burns, hence the need to finish the treatment with a YAG laser. However, it may be more effective for brown skin types that are not suitable for Alexandrite laser and require many more treatments with the YAG laser, which is not very absorbed by melanin.
Advantages of Diode:
- Suitable for all skin types.
- Fastest treatments available. Can be used at the beginning of treatment for speed.
- Effective for light skin and dark hair with more sessions than Alexandrite.
- More effective for brown skin with fewer sessions than the YAG laser.
- Easy to use and configure.
Disadvantages of Diode:
- Reduced effectiveness at the end of treatment when hairs are thin or pale.
- Limited effectiveness on black skin.
3. YAG Laser:
The YAG laser emits a wavelength of 1064 nanometers, making it more penetrating into the skin. It is the laser least absorbed by melanin. This makes it a safer option for darker skin types, as it minimizes the risk of burns. However, the YAG laser requires more sessions to achieve optimal results and may be less effective on fine hairs. It is the only laser that is safe and effective for dark or black skin types.

- Suitable for very dark or black skin.
- Safest laser.
Disadvantages of YAG:
- Requires many more sessions for optimal results.
- Less effective on fine hairs.
- May be more painful.
6. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL):
IPL is not a definitive solution. In fact, it only weakens the hair and requires several treatments that will never end. We have 2 IPL devices in our clinic, but we do not use them for hair removal.
7. Combined Diode Lasers:
These lasers combine wavelengths in each pulse, either 755 nm with 810 nm or 810 nm with 1064 nm. In other words, each pulse generates a combination of the two wavelengths. This approach aims to increase the effectiveness of the diode laser, but the results will remain inferior to those obtained with a single true wavelength.
8. Painless Diode Lasers:
These lasers involve passing multiple times over the same area with low intensity for a certain time. Although this method is less painful, it only miniaturizes the hair without completely destroying it. This requires more sessions, and in most cases, treatments are not permanent. Although our diode laser integrates this option, we rarely use it because it is less effective. The best option remains to use a single pulse per region with an appropriate intensity.

Why Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Is Not Actually a Laser ?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) consists of white light containing all spectra of colors. During the treatment, a filter must be used to eliminate unnecessary wavelengths. For example, if the device emits 15 joules of energy using a filter, only about 5 joules may actually reach the hair. Due to this low energy transfer, multiple sessions may be required depending on the area treated. Although IPL can reduce hair growth, it is generally less effective than laser, especially for darker, thicker hair.
The laser contains only one specific wavelength that is selectively absorbed by the hair. No filter is needed, and all the energy is directed straight to the hair follicle. This focused delivery of energy makes laser treatments more efficient — especially on dark hair — allowing for quicker, more noticeable, and longer-lasting results.
