What Is a Cyst?

A cyst is a closed sac filled with fluid, sebum, or other substances that forms beneath the skin or within tissues. While the term “cyst” can refer to a wide variety of growths, the most common skin cysts—such as sebaceous cysts or epidermoid cysts—typically appear on the face, scalp, back, neck, or genital area. These masses are usually round, firm, and movable under the skin, which helps differentiate them from other conditions like lipomas or abscesses.

Cysts most often develop when glands or hair follicles become clogged due to excess sebum, dead skin cells, or localized inflammation. In some cases, trauma or genetic factors can also play a role. The size of a cyst can range from a few millimeters to several centimeters. While they are often painless, cysts can become painful or red if they become infected or exert pressure on nearby tissues.

Unlike other types of skin growths, cysts may remain stable for months or even years, but they can also grow or become inflamed suddenly. Although they are benign in the vast majority of cases, an infected cyst requires medical treatment to avoid complications such as an abscess or rupture.

It is important not to attempt to squeeze or remove a cyst on your own, as this may worsen inflammation or lead to infection. Treatment options include drainage, corticosteroid injections, or, in some cases, minor surgical excision to remove the cyst and its capsule.

If you discover a lump under your skin, it is always recommended to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis to distinguish a cyst from other skin or subcutaneous conditions such as a lipoma or a tumor-like lesion.
