What Causes Large Pores and Uneven Texture?
Pores are tiny openings on the surface of the skin that play a vital role in maintaining healthy skin function. They are connected to two main structures:
- Sebaceous glands, which produce sebum — a natural oil that travels through the pores to hydrate and protect the outermost layer of the skin.
- Sweat glands, which help regulate body temperature by allowing sweat to pass through the pores during perspiration.
While pores are essential, their visibility and size can vary significantly from one person to another. Some individuals have barely noticeable pores, while others experience enlarged or visibly stretched pores, especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) where sebaceous activity is higher.
Contrary to popular belief, pores do not open or close like doors. When the sebaceous glands are overactive and produce excess oil, pores may appear larger as they expand to allow more sebum to reach the surface. Over time, factors such as genetics, oily skin, aging, sun damage, and collagen loss can all contribute to the appearance of dilated pores and uneven skin texture.
As the skin loses collagen and elasticity with age, it becomes less able to keep the pores tight and refined — which is why skin firming and pore-minimizing treatments can help improve the overall look and texture of the skin.
Possible Causes
- Genetics
- Hormonal changes or imbalances (puberty, menopause)
- Blackheads + sebum accumulation
- Ineffective cleaning (makeup residue)
- Poor lifestyle (tobacco, fatigue, poor diet)
- Pollution and other impurities
- Sagging skin (loss of elasticity of the skin)
- Excessive sun exposure

Our Approach to Treating Enlarged Pores
Using advanced 3D imaging technology, we analyze the visibility and distribution of enlarged pores across the face. Thanks to ultraviolet light analysis, we can also assess the activity of the sebaceous glands by visualizing sebum accumulation in the pores.
Once the underlying causes and contributing factors are identified, we create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your skin’s condition and goals.
We offer multiple levels of treatment, depending on the severity of pore dilation and the overall skin quality:
- Medical-grade topical creams to regulate sebum production and reinforce skin firmness, helping to reduce pore visibility.
- HydraFacial treatments to deeply cleanse pores and reduce congestion.
- Microneedling or RF (radiofrequency) to stimulate collagen production and improve texture.
- EndyMed FSR, a radiofrequency-based fractional skin resurfacing treatment, ideal for refining pores and smoothing skin.
- Pico and fractional lasers to resurface the skin and tighten pore structure.
- TCA CROSS or EnerJet for targeted correction of deep or localized pore damage.
- Deep resurfacing laser treatments for severe texture irregularities, offering dramatic collagen remodeling and skin renewal.
For optimal results, we often recommend combining different technologies. This synergistic approach allows us to address multiple factors—such as oil production, skin laxity, and surface irregularities—ensuring visibly smoother skin and a more refined pore appearance.
While pores cannot be completely removed, our multi-level approach can deliver impressive improvements in skin texture, tone, and clarity.
