What Are Large Pores?

The pores of the skin are small orifices that are (1) connected to the sebaceous glands which serve as a passage for the sebum in order to hydrate the first layer of the skin and (2) connected to the sweat glands in order to let sweat pass when we sweat. Pores are vital to the proper functioning of the body.

The size of these small holes varies. They are very dilated in some people and barely visible in others. The most affected areas are most often in the T-zone, the forehead, nose and chin. Contrary to what some people think, pores do not open and do not close. When the sebaceous glands produce sebum and it rises to the surface, the pores expand. People with very active glands (hyper productivity) are more likely to have enlarged pores over time. Sagging skin can also be responsible for the appearance of large pores. In fact, the more collagen we lose, the more elasticity the skin loses and the less it has the capacity to tighten pores.

Possible Causes

  • Genetics
  • Hormonal changes or imbalances (puberty, menopause)
  • Blackheads + sebum accumulation
  • Ineffective cleaning (makeup residue)
  • Poor lifestyle (tobacco, fatigue, poor diet)
  • Pollution and other impurities
  • Sagging skin (loss of elasticity of the skin)
  • Excessive sun exposure

Our Approach

Thanks to 3D photos, we will be able to visualize the enlarged pores and identify their distribution on the face. Also, it will be possible to determine if these glands are very productive thanks to the ultraviolet light which allows us to see the sebum in the pores. Once the origin and the responsible factors have been identified, we will build a treatment plan to improve the appearance of large pores.

There are different solutions. Some are less invasive, such as slowing the production of the sebaceous glands by applying medicated creams. If there is less sebum to evacuate, the pores will be less stressed, therefore less visible (open). There are also maintenance treatments like Hydrafacials, which allows deep pore cleaning by “sucking” the sebum that is housed there. There are also more invasive, but more effective solutions. They consist of the stimulation of collagen in the skin. If the tissues surrounding the pores become denser, then they will appear tighter.

The solutions are adapted according to the condition of the pores. What must be understood is that it is impossible to make them disappear. They will still be there, but with a tighter appearance.
