What Is a Neurofibroma?

A neurofibroma is a benign tumor of the peripheral nerves, composed of a mixture of nerve cells, connective tissue, and Schwann cells. These growths typically form under the skin but can also develop deeper within the tissues. Cutaneous neurofibromas often appear as small, soft, rounded, or slightly raised masses, and are usually mobile to the touch.

These lesions are associated with abnormal growth of nerve tissue and are frequently linked to genetic mutations, such as those found in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Neurofibromas may appear as isolated growths or multiple lesions, depending on whether they are sporadic or part of a genetic disorder.

In general, neurofibromas are painless, but they can cause discomfort or pain if they press on nearby nerves or develop in sensitive areas. Their size can vary significantly, ranging from just a few millimeters to several centimeters.

Although they are benign, neurofibromas should be evaluated by a healthcare professional—especially if they change in appearance, become painful, or are present in large numbers, which may suggest a hereditary condition requiring specialized care. Treatment depends on the number, size, location, and associated symptoms. Options may include simple observation, surgical excision, or, in rare cases, referral to neuro-oncology if atypical transformation is suspected.

It is strongly discouraged to manipulate or attempt to remove a neurofibroma on your own. A proper medical evaluation is essential to confirm the diagnosis and distinguish the lesion from other subcutaneous growths, such as lipomas or cysts.
